Land Rover has developed new technology for off-road and challenging driving conditions. The “Transparent Hood” is designed with virtual imaging technology.
So what exactly is virtual imaging technology?
Cameras located at the front of the vehicle capture data that is then projected onto a full width display at the base of the windshield. This gives the off-roader a clear view of underneath and just ahead of the vehicle, giving early notice to possible hazards that lay ahead. Giving the appearance of a ‘see-through’ hood and full engine compartment view is ground-breaking technology in visual driver assistance.
In real world scenarios, a driver climbing a steep incline or negotiating turns in a confined space is able see a virtual view of both the terrain in front of the car and the angle and position of the front wheels.
Dr. Wolfgang Epple, Director of Research and Technology for Jaguar Land Rover said, “As our vehicles become more capable and offer increasing autonomy off-road, we will ensure the driver has the confidence to progress over any terrain. We are developing new technologies including the Transparent Hood to give drivers an augmented view of reality to help them tackle anything from the toughest off-road route to the tight confines of urban parking.”
The public got its first view of the Transparent Hood concept at the New York Auto show in April of this year with Land Rover’s new Discovery Vision Concept car. Production of the Discovery line, which also boasts Gesture Recognition Control and Remote Control Drive, is slated for release for the 2015 model year.
